LAGRANGE - LaGrange County Recorder Jennifer McBride is cautioning land owners not to fall for a scam involving deeds.
She says an agency will send a letter or make a phone call to land owners telling them it is urgent they obtain a copy of their deed. The communication makes it sound like getting a copy is a long drawn-out affair that is very costly. They offer to provide a copy of the deed as a service to the land owner for a payment of $80 to $90 dollars.
McBride says getting a copy of a deed is a fairly quick and painless process, costing on average a dollar per page for a document that’s typically only one to three pages long.
The last time this scam went around most of the land owners who used the service never received their deeds.
McBride says the scam is coming to northern Indiana again, and recently occurred in Steuben County. She says you can come to the county recorder’s office and obtain a copy of your deed, or call them and order one by phone.
