(STURGIS) – An Internet fad has put a Sturgis man in the hospital.
According to WWMT dot com, 32 year old Tommy Smith recently took part in the Cold Water Challenge. Through social media, people are challenging friends and family members to jump into a body of cold water and then post the video within 24 hours.
If the person fails to accept or complete the challenge, they must make a donation to a charity.
Smith dove into Grey Lake north of Sturgis to do his challenge, but struck his head on something and did not come up. Dee Dee Taylor, a friend of Smith's, was fishing with her son and saw the incident. She went into the water and pulled Smith to safety.
Emergency crews arrived and flew Smith to a Kalamazoo hospital. He reportedly has three fractures to his neck and is paralyzed from the waist down.
Taylor says she saw about 17 people jump into the lake in the two hours she was fishing.
