(NILES) – An Elkhart man was shot by police during a robbery attempt at a Niles restaurant.
Niles Police Chief Jim Millin along with Michigan State Police from the Niles Post says both departments were called just after 11 PM Friday by a citizen who reported an armed robbery at the Long John Silver's restaurant.
Officers arrived at the scene as did the Berrien County Sheriff's Department and positioned themselves around the building. Three officers entered the restaurant through the front door.
As they made their way through the restaurant, the officers confronted the suspect, 39 year old Eddie Macon Jr. of Elkhart, armed with a handgun near the back of the building. As officers approached Macon, he went out the back door and engaged the officers that were positioned there.
Niles and MSP officers returned fire and struck Macon. He was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
Officers recovered Macon's handgun and the money from the the restaurant at the scene. The matter is still under investigation.
