(ANGOLA) - After observing a moment of silence in memory of Steuben County Highway Department Superintendent Kenny Penick, the Steuben County Council on Monday morning approved funding to partially cover repairs to highway department equipment that was damaged during the brutal winter of 2013-2014. Penick was scheduled to appear before the Council but he was killed in a motorcycle accident on State Road 120 east of Orland on Saturday night. County Commissioner Ron Smith and County Engineer Jennifer Sharkey filled in for him.
The Council approved a $125,000 transfer out of Major Moves for road repair, construction and equipment. Sharkey said the harsh winter left them short of funds. Smith said County Commissioners along with Sharkey and Penick took a tour of county roads last week and found some in very bad shape.
The Council also approved a $350,000 additional appropriation out of the general highway fund which included $300,000 for motor vehicle highway and repairs to equipment which Smith said was damaged during the winter. The additional appropriation also covers $25,000 for garage and motor supplies and another $25,000 for truck and tractor repairs.
