(UNDATED) - Indiana Workforce Development reported on Friday that Steuben County's unemployment rate in April dipped to 5.4 percent which was almost a one percent drop from March when it was 6.3 percent. It's also down from April of 2013 when it was 7.2 percent. Unemployment went down in neighboring counties as well. LaGrange County was at 4.3 percent while DeKalb, Elkhart and Noble Counties were at five percent. All of the northeastern Indiana counties were below the state jobless rate of 5.7 percent.
During the depths of the recession, LaGrange County had one of the highest unemployment rates in the state. Friday's figures show just eight counties in Indiana had a lower unemployment rate than LaGrange County in April.
I.W.D. Commissioner Scott Sanders says the state's unemployment rate continues to drop because more state residents are going back to work as the labor force continues to grow in Indiana.
