(CENTREVILLE) – Like many other counties in the State, St. Joseph County is having problems with their roads.

That was part of the message delivered Thursday during a road summit hosted by the St. Joseph County Road Commission.

Road Commission Manager-Engineer Christopher Bolt gave an overview of what his organization is responsible for to the audience of 70 that attended the meeting.

Bolt says the Road Commission needs between $11 and $12 million a year to be able to handle all of their projects and maintenance around the County. Currently they receive between $5 and $6 million a year as Bolt explains where the majority of those funds come from. ...... {LISTEN}.

The County also receives $1.2 million annually from the County Road Millage, which Bolt says many counties in Michigan do not have.

Bolt says it's within the last 10 years that St. Joseph County started seeing a reduction in the State funding. ...... {LISTEN}.

Bolt says with these cuts, the Road Commission is trying their best to continue to take care of what they can, but unfortunately some projects have been pushed back and some even put on indefinite hold because of lack of funds.

Bolt told the audience that a renewal of the existing millage would continue to bring in $1.2 million dollars for the Road Commission annually. He also shared about the proposal for a new 2 mill request that will be on the August ballot that would generate $2.6 million annually that would be a big help for the Road Commission to do the work that is needed around the County.
