(STURGIS) – Two retiring lawmakers were honored at the 2014 St. Joseph County Lincoln Day Dinner.

State Representative Matt Lori of the 59th House District and State Senator Bruce Caswell of the 16th Senate District are both retiring due to term limits.

Caswell was not in attendance due to the death of a close friend. St. Joseph County Republican Party Chairman Rod Chupp shared with the audience some of Caswell's achievements both as an educator and later as a lawmaker. Chupp says he asked Caswell what he would like to tell those in attendance about his service to the 16th District over two terms and this is what Chupp says Caswell wanted to say. ...... {LISTEN}.

Lori, who served six years in the Michigan House, says when he was first elected in 2009, he sat back for a few weeks to get the lay of the land. He then handed out an informational sheet on himself to the Democrats in the House.

It was following that move that Lori says he had his first contact with one of the Democratic leaders and how it helped him out. ...... {LISTEN}.

Both Lori and Caswell were given small statues of Abraham Lincoln for their service to the State.

State Senator John Proos was also not able to attend the luncheon due to the sudden death of his father. A member of his staff shared some comments about how he has worked with both Lori and Caswell and valued their friendship and leadership.

Five World War II veterans were also honored as special guests during the luncheon. They are Paul Watters, Cliff Sherman, Floyd Hodges, Dillion Fritz and Fred Verse.
