HOWE - A sizeable donation from a graduate and a projected increase in enrollment prompted Howe Military Academy’s Board of Directors to keep the school open.
Howe Military Superintendent Colonel George Douglas says the board action on Monday will keep the school open for the coming school year.
The donation of $2-million dollars came from Thomas Parker, a 1939
graduate of Howe.
Douglas said a committee will focus on academics and facility maintenance in the coming months. The school will also divest some property to help ease maintenance and operating costs.
Fears were voiced prior to Monday’s meeting that the school would close due to declining enrollment and escalating costs.
Douglas said the school’s “faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and students can now proceed with their plans for the coming academic year free from uncertainty about the Academy’s future.”
