Caswell Says Gas Tax Is Obsolete

(CENTREVILLE) – A State lawmaker is of the opinion that the gas tax is outdated and doesn't take care of Michigan roads like it's supposed to.

Those were just some of the comments made by State Senator Bruce Caswell, who was one of the featured speakers at a recent Road Summit, hosted by the St. Joseph County Road Commission.

Caswell says Michigan has done a poor job of long term planning for road repairs which has led us into the situation we are now in around the State. He told the audience that he just returned from the Mackinaw Bridge and they have increased the fee to go over the Mighty Mac. Caswell says the increase is because a big project is coming up in five years for the bridge and they want to make sure they have the $90 million needed for the work.

Caswell says as far as he is concerned, the gas tax is not doing the job of getting money for road work and needs to be eliminated. ...... {LISTEN}.

Caswell says one new funding option is a mileage tax, similar to what Oregon has gone to. The other, which seems to be the overwhelming choice of people in his Senate District, is an increase in the sales tax. ...... {LISTEN}.

Caswell says that would be enough money to get things started on fixing our roads, which is going to take a long time to do.

The other options according to Caswell are to increase the gas tax or pay a fee based on your vehicle's registration fee. But Caswell says he believes that will just drive people out of state to buy their vehicles.
