(LAKE GAGE) - One person was seriously burned and a firefighter had to be treated for exhaustion late Friday night when two barn fires broke out near Lake Gage. Kim Norton from the Orland Fire Department says crews were called to the 7000 West block of County Road 350 North at about 11:30pm. One barn, owned by Vera Delancey, was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived. Orland firefighters got assistance from the Fremont, Angola, Hudson, and Salem Center fire departments.
Norton says the barn had numerous pieces of farm equipment inside which were considered a total loss as was the barn. The second barn was extinguished with not a great deal of damage. The total amount of damage was estimated at $175,000.
Over 40 firefighters battled the blaze and were on the scene for 2 1/2 hours. The person who was burned was a resident at the adjacent house. He was injured while trying to put the fire out before firefighters arrived. He was treated by Orland Fire Rescue and Steuben County E.M.S. and then transported to a Fort Wayne burn unit by Samaritan Helicopter. His name has not been released.
The cause of the fire was listed as accidental.
Also assisting were Steuben County 9-1-1, the Steuben County Sheriffs Department, Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
