Coldwater, MI

(COLDWATER) – More details have been released about the investigation into the death of a seven month old baby boy.

The Coldwater Police Department arrested 43 year old Steven Eric Shaw on June 1 in connection with the death of seven month old Carson Burm. Shaw has been arraigned on a charge of Open Murder.

A preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Tuesday was postponed while Shaw undergoes a forensic psychiatric evaluation that was requested by his attorney.

Investigators say Shaw lived with the victim's mother Laura Kidney and her two children, ages 2 years old and 7 months, in an apartment on Cutter Avenue. Police say Shaw called 911 just after 1 PM on May 28 and said Burm was not breathing.

The Coldwater Fire Department and Life Care Ambulance arrived and found Burm had no pulse or respiration. They started CPR and took the baby to the Community Health Center of Branch County. Burm was flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo where he died the next day.

An autopsy has been conducted and the results are pending. Medical staff at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bronson told police that Burm's head injuries would have had immediate medical consequences, and they were lethal.

Police say Shaw's version of events is not consistent with Burm's injuries.

Police say Burm's mother was working at the time of the incident. She left the apartment at 11 AM leaving Shaw to supervise Burm, his sister and a family friend. When police interviewed the friend, they said they had been picked up at 11:30 AM and Burm and his sister were fine at that time.

Based on medical information, police say Burm was injured shortly before the 911 call was made when Shaw was the only one in the apartment with the children.

Police say the case remains under investigation.
