(CENTREVILLE) – A St. Joseph County organization is encouraging people to save money and not drive their vehicles for one day.
The St. Joseph County Transportation Authority is joining with other public transportation systems across the United States to participate in the ninth annual National Dump The Pump Day on Thursday, June 19.
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, Dump The Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. The event started in 2006 when gas prices were at $3 per gallon.
According to the April APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two person household can save an average of just over $10,180 annually by downsizing to one vehicle.
Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies in urban, suburban and rural communities. Public transportation helps to make a community economically prosperous and competitive. Every one dollar invested in public transportation generates approximately four dollars in economic returns.
