(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Third District Republican Congressman Marlin Stutzman lost out in his bid to become House Majority Whip on Thursday as G.O.P. House members selected Steve Scalise of Louisiana. He will take over for Kevin McCarthy of California who was earlier named the new majority leader. Peter Roskam of Illinois was the other candidate for the leadership position. The leadership votes were needed after Eric Cantor's loss last week in his Republican primary. Scalise won on the first ballot. No vote totals were released but "The Hill" reports Stutzman drew support from ardent conservatives wary of Scalise for his ties to the leadership and his work with Democrats on a flood insurance deal that many on the right opposed as fiscally irresponsible.
