(WATERLOO) - The DeKalb County Sheriffs Department says a Garrett man was arrested on 11 charges Friday morning after he allegedly led police on a chase into some woods and left two children behind in his vehicle. Sheriffs Department Captain Michael Keesler says Deputy Nick Grate pulled a vehicle over on I-69 northbound at 3:47am for traffic infractions. During the course of the stop, 26-year-old Steven R. Nolen Junior fled on foot crossing both lanes of the interstate. Grate stayed with the two children in the vehicle while the suspect was pursued on foot. Police from Waterloo, Auburn and Butler along with the Indiana State Police set up a perimeter of the area. A K-9 unit was used to help find Nolen who police say was hiding behind some weeds in a ditch line submerged in water. Among the charges Nolen is facing are two Class D felonies for Neglect of a Dependent Child. He is also facing seven drug possession charges. The children were placed into the care of the D.C.S. and later released to their mother.
