(ANGOLA) - Two women became the fifth same sex couple to get a marriage license right before closing time on Friday afternoon from the Steuben County Clerks Office. That maybe the last same sex marriage license in Steuben County for awhile after the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request from the Indiana Attorney General's office and issued a stay on the Wednesday ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Young which overturned Indiana's ban on gay marriages.
Steuben County Clerk Shelly Herbert said Friday morning her office was issuing marriage licenses to all couples including same sex couples. The change came a day after Steuben County Attorney Don Stuckey advised Herbert in an e-mail that her office should not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples until a ruling is received on the request for a stay of Judge Young's order.
Herbert says Stuckey talked with other county attornies on Thursday and after a re-evaluation, she was told to go ahead and issue the same sex marriage licenses.
Two female couples and three male couples got marriage licenses from the Clerks office on Friday before the stay was issued.
