(WATERLOO) - Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon on U.S. 6 west of Waterloo when their motorcycle crashed into a semi. The DeKalb County Sheriffs Department says 47-year-old Michael E. Wilson of Auburn and 34-year-old Michelle L. Reser of Angola were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which took place at about 1:40pm near County Road 24.
The Sheriffs Department stated in a news release that Wilson was driving the motorcycle and failed to negotiate a left hand turn. His motorcycle left the road just south of a bridge. It went through a grass field and then up an embankment to U.S. 6 before it became airborne and entered traffic on U.S. 6 where it collided with a semi driven by 33-year-old Bradley Grove of East Liberty, Ohio.
Grove told police he tried to avoid the collision but was unable to as he veered right into the break down lane on U.S. 6. A witness reported seeing the motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed just prior to the collision. Grove was not injured.
The Sheriffs Department says the fatal victims were not wearing helmets.
They were assisted by the Indiana State Police, Waterloo Fire Rescue, the Waterloo Marshal's Office, DeKalb County E.M.S. and the DeKalb County Coroners office.
