(ANGOLA) - Steuben County residents now have access to 9-1-1 through the use of text messaging from their wireless handsets. Steuben County Interim Communications Director Ken Lowden says they have been working with the Indiana Statewide 9-1-1 Board and that INdigital telecom of Fort Wayne designed, built and operate the IN911 network.
Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint and its partner TeleCommunication Systems are providing the text to 911 service. Lowden says AT&T is not ready yet to provide Text to 911 in Steuben County and Indiana.
Customers are reminded to text if the 9-1-1 option is not available. Using a phone to call 9-1-1 is still the most efficient way to get emergency help.
The F.C.C. wants all other wireless carriers to provide text to 911 by the end of the year.
