ELKHART - For the fourth time in a week, Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies worked a serious motorcycle accident Sunday evening.
A car driven by 26-year-old Jose Sanchez of Goshen turned in front of a motorcycle driven by 26-year-old Shazzar Mack of Elkhart. Mack - who was not wearing a helmet - was thrown from the cycle and suffered head injuries. He was taken to Elkhart Memorial Hospital.
The crash happened just before 10 p-m at the intersection of County Roads 16 and 1. Deputies cited Sanchez for failure to yield.
Earlier Sunday 42-year-old Jason Espinoza of Elkhart died when his motorcycle failed to round the curve on U-S 20 east of County Road 13. It crossed the center line and struck a car. Witnesses said excessive speed by the cycle was a factor in the crash. Espinoza was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.
Undersheriff Sean Holmes says three of the four motorcycle accidents in the last week were fatalities.
He reminded motorists that the nice weather brings out large numbers of motorcycle, mopeds and bicycles and they need to watch for them and share the road safely.
And Holmes added that while wearing a helmet isn’t required, cyclists could save their lives by wearing one.
