(PENN TOWNSHIP) – An Illinois man lost his life in a drowning incident over the weekend in Cass County.
Sheriff Joseph Underwood says at 10:30 Sunday morning, Cass County Central Dispatch received a call from observers on Donnell Lake of a subject struggling in the water and calling for help.
Some people went into the water to assist, but by the time they got to the area, the man had already gone under water. The Cass County Sheriff's Marine Division and Dive Team responded, and with assistance from the Indian Lake Fire Department water rescue team and the Penn Township Fire Department, found the subject at 12:55 PM.
The victim, identified as 67 year old Vincent P. Churak of Evergreen Park, IL., lived on the lake and was an avid swimmer. Authorities say he was using a paddleboard when he fell off for some reason. A life vest was on the paddleboard, but not used by Churak.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
