(UNDATED) – Authorities have found a fisherman who went missing late Saturday night.
St. Joseph County Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite says the St. Joseph County Marine Division and Dive Rescue teams were getting ready to end their search around 6 PM Monday when a resident who lived within two miles of the incident location called authorities saying they had found a body. It was identified as the missing man, 66 year old Tommy McDonald of Constantine.
Lillywhite says McDonald and his son went fishing at 10 PM Saturday on the St. Joseph River between the 67000 block of Oxbow Road and the 11000 block of Riverside Drive. Around 2:30 AM, McDonald allegedly fell from the boat.
McDonald's son said he tried to get to his father, but couldn't because of the river's current. He swam to shore and then called for help.
Lillywhite says the incident is being called an accidental drowning, but is still open to investigation. An autopsy will be performed to determine McDonald's exact cause of death.
Lillywhite says the Constantine and White Pigeon Fire Departments played key roles in helping secure the scene, as well as recovery of McDonald's body. Also assisting in the investigation were the St. Joseph County Victims Services and the Michigan State Police.
