(HOWARD TOWNSHIP) – One person was killed and another is in critical condition following a two vehicle crash in Cass County.
Sheriff Joseph Underwood says 19 year old Austin Brouwer of Osceola, Indiana was driving north on M-60 near Yankee Street at a high rate of speed just before 10 PM Saturday. Brouwer was passing a vehicle on the right side of the highway when he lost control of his own automobile.
Brouwer was able to get his vehicle back on the roadway, but struck another automobile, driven by 32 year old Douglas Irving of Niles. Brouwer then went into the grass median and flipped over several times.
Authorities say a back seat passenger in the Brouwer vehicle, 23 year old Rayna Dobrodt, was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Niles, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Brouwer is in serious be stable condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital. The front seat passenger, 21 year old Janet Menting of South Bend was also taken to Memorial Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Another back seat passenger, 21 year old Scott Voresis of South Bend was taken to Lakeland Hospital where he was treated and released.
Irving was also taken to Lakeland Hospital where he was treated and released.
Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the crash and everyone was wearing their safety belts. The crash remains under investigation.
Assisting at the scene were the Howard Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police, along with Life Care and SMCAS Ambulance Services.
