Sturgis, MI

(STURGIS) – Getting to know your neighbors, public safety personnel and finding activities to do as a family is the purpose behind a special event next Tuesday.

The Sturgis Police Department and the City of Sturgis are hosting the 2014 National Night Out Event for St. Joseph County. The first National Night Out event was held in 1984, but St. Joseph County didn't hold their first event until 2010.

Sturgis Deputy Police Chief David Ives says when Sturgis hosted National Night Out in 2011, the committee came up with a local theme for the event, which is still being used today. ...... {LISTEN}.

The event will start with a “silent parade” of emergency vehicles at 4:30 PM coming from the Chicago Road-Centreville Road intersection and heading east to South Franks Avenue where they will turn and proceed to the east side of Sturgis High School.

Ives says there will be free food and entertainment provided through the gracious donations of several sponsors. Gifts for the kids and many door prizes for adults will also be given away.

Some of the highlights include live alligators from the Alligator Sanctuary; a 30 foot climbing wall; rope pulls; kids fingerprinting and free eye checks; demonstrations by area clubs; a DNR hunting and shooting gallery; and local resident and TV host Mark Zona will be on hand to sign autographs and discuss bass fishing tips.

Several area organizations will also be on hand to share information on what they do. National Night Out runs from 5 to 8 PM and everyone is welcome to attend.
