Safety Town Open For Business
Friday Aug 01, 2014 10:40am
Wall School • Sturgis, MI

By: Mike Stiles

(STURGIS) – After a year of planning, fundraising and construction, Safety Town is finally open.

The miniature version of Sturgis was constructed at Wall School and will be used to teach incoming kindergarteners where and when to cross the street, school bus safety, what to do if there are downed power lines, and weather safety along with other topics.

Sturgis Public Schools Resource Officer Daman Knapp says the idea for Safety Town came from Detective-Sergeant Ryan Banaczak when he was the School Resource Officer. Banaczak got the schools and City on board with the project and then started asking businesses and organizations for financial donations.

Knapp says when he became the School Resource Officer in August 2013, he started reaching out to people to help get Safety Town built. ...... {LISTEN}.

The students and their instructors worked on this over the course of the school year and even into this summer, coming down to put the buildings together and then paint them.

Knapp says the funds for the project came from many different sources. ...... {LISTEN}.

Knapp says he is especially happy with the number of decorative bricks that were purchased and then inscribed with the donors' name. The bricks were then put into Safety Town.

Knapp says there will be a Sturgis Safety Camp for all incoming kindergarteners. It will run from August 11 to 22 with both morning and
afternoon sessions.

To sign up, you can go on line to the Safety Town web site. click here.
