What To Do With The Arkwright's Property

By: Mike Stiles

(STURGIS) – The Sturgis City Commission is looking at possible plans for the former Arkwright's Property in downtown Sturgis.

It's been five years since the Arkwright's building at the intersection of East Chicago Road and North Monroe Street was demolished by the City. Sturgis received grant funds to help with the project and as part of the agreement, the City could not discuss plans for the property for five years.

That time has passed and City Manager Mike Hughes wanted to ask the Commissioners for input on what to do with the land. Hughes says that during a recent Downtown Development Authority meeting, some questions were asked if and how the property was being marketed.

Hughes says some information was put together and periodically some inquiries have been made about the land. ...... {LISTEN}.

Hughes reminded the Commissioners about what they originally envisioned the property being used for. LIND.

Several ideas were thrown about by the Commission, such as an area for a farmer's market, or possibly a park for events similar to Free Church Park, which is right across the street.

The Commission agreed to come up with some suggestions and discuss the matter again during a future meeting.
