(UNDATED) – The children of David Locey have issued a statement regarding the loss of their father and the last nine months of their lives.
The statement, authored by Kimberlee Bontrager, Tod Locey, Jill Grisdale and Jeff Locey described the murder of their father on October 2, 2013 in his Sturgis office, the investigation and subsequent trial of Andy Brown as a nightmare. But they say there has been a silver lining.
While the family says they have struggled every day with the fact that their father is gone, they say their hearts have grown to include the amazing people of Sturgis and the surrounding communities that formed a candlelight vigil and then filled the church for Locey's funeral.
The children want to thank the twelve members of the jury who unselfishly put their personal commitments on hold for three weeks to perform their civic responsibility with grace and professionalism.
They also want to thank the staff of the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office, Sheriff's Department and Major Crimes Task Force and the Michigan State Police. Specifically, Prosecutor John McDonough, Detective Sergeant Lonnie Palmer, Assistant Prosecutor Josh Robare and Detective Sergeant Chad Spence.
While the family says they still find it difficult to accept the cruel fate of such unimaginable evil, they hold tight to a lifetime of happy memories. They say fortunately, evil does not have a hold on love.
