(SHERMAN TOWNSHIP) – A Sturgis man is in custody after leading police on a chase Saturday evening.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Brad Balk says one of his afternoon shift Sergeants was traveling south on Shimmel Road near Mintdale Road around 7 PM Saturday when a vehicle driven by 22 year old Stephen O. Stockwell pulled into the right of way of the patrol car.
Stockwell's vehicle struck the patrol car on the passenger's side and then fled the scene, heading east on Mintdale. In his attempt to evade police, Stockwell ran several stop signs and struck a guard rail.
Stockwell was eventually taken into custody, and admitted to officers he had a meth lab in the trunk of his vehicle. Officers located an active one pot meth lab and four older one pot meth labs along with several components used in the manufacturing of meth.
The Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Sturgis Police Department and the Tri Township Fire Department.
Balk is urging anyone who may have seen the accident at Shimmel and Mintdale Roads to please call the Sheriff's Department at 467-9045, extension 323.
