LaGrange County moving towards merit based raises

LAGRANGE – LaGrange County hasn't reached its goal of a merit based pay system for county employees yet, but it's making progress.

That was the consensus during a discussion by County Council members.

Commission President Jac Price told council members that Human Resources Director Lu Ann McConnehey has made progress in her first five months.

"In less than six months time, we've come a long way. I think we are going to be very happy at the end of the first year of her being in an H-R department and getting the staff, and that's elected employees and department heads on down, into a system that works for the county. Is it perfect? No. Never will be. But we're certainly making headway," said Price.

McConnehey has held training sessions with department heads on performance evaluations but doesn't think they've reached the point of tying all raises to them just yet.

"This year I know that a lot of them are already done. So, look them over. Keep them in the file at a minimum. Traditionally the thought is 'everyone gets three percent'. Not sure about this year. We've only have about four or five months left in the year. Do you think it's time to make that separation, for pay for performance?" McConnehey said.

Council discussed a goal of having performance evaluations done twice each year.

The discussion came during the second day of budget hearings by the council.
