(SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP) – An Illinois man is in critical condition following an incident on Dewey Lake in Cass County.
Sheriff Joseph Underwood says his department responded to a 911 call around 1:20 PM Saturday of a person who called for help and then disappeared in the water.
Deputies arrived on scene and found that neighbors had pulled 24 year old Abdi Adan of Wheaton, Illinois from the water and were administering CPR. Emergency personnel from the Sister Lakes Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance were also called to the scene and took over CPR and were able to establish a pulse.
Adan was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit.
During their investigation, deputies determined that Adan swam out to assist his sister who was having trouble turning a kayak around to come back to shore. Adan began to have trouble swimming and called out for help.
Neighbors heard his calls and swam out to him, but couldn't reach Adan before he went under. They found him in 15 feet of water and pulled Adan to shore where CPR was started.
