City Commission Discusses Electric Distribution Options
Tuesday Sep 02, 2014 7:15pm

(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis is looking at how they want to distribute electricity to residential homes in the future.

During a recent work session, Electric Department Supervisor John Griffith shared with the City Commission three options that had been discussed earlier in the summer. One is to continue constructing an overhead system along the rear lot lines. A second option would be to construct an overhead system in the street public right of way and the third is constructing an underground system in the street public right of way.

Griffith says the two biggest concerns with in-place reconstruction include the lack of access and limiting the use of the back yard by the property owner/tenant.

Commissioner Mark Dvorak says he's in favor of the underground system, and remembers an ice storm in his hometown in South Dakota that knocked out electricity for 11 days. He says if the power lines had been underground at that time, there would not have been a power outage, and that's why he favors that method for Sturgis in the future.

Other Commissioners agreed that the City should gather more information on this method. Griffith said he would and report back to the Commission at a later date.

The Commission will also try to come up with ways to engage the public for input on this possible new electric distribution system.
