Verlander (15-8) allowed one run and walked one while striking out seven. Three players - White Sox starter Freddy Garcia (back), Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera (shoulder) and White Sox designated hitter Manny Ramirez (hand) - all left the game with injuries.

Michigan St. happy to play 'road' game in Detroit
EAST LANSING (AP) - Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio is preparing for a rare, in-state road game with Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon, a sandwich game between an opening win over Western Michigan and a prime-time visit from Notre Dame. Dantonio says it's good when the Spartans can drive 80 miles to Detroit's Ford Field instead of flying 1,500 miles each way. It's also a plus that friends, family and fans can see the relocated game in a building where several players have competed for state titles.

Kelly: Prepping for Mich QB Denard tough
SOUTH BEND (AP) - Notre Dame dealt with a mobile quarterback in beating Purdue last week. The Irish have a much bigger challenge this week. Coach Brian Kelly says there's a big difference between defending Purdue's Robert Marve, who could move in the pocket, and Michigan's speedy Denard Robinson, who carried 29 times last week. In the Wolverines' opener against Connecticut, Robinson set a Michigan single-game record for total offense (383 yards) and rushing (197) by a quarterback. Kelly said Tuesday that finding someone from the scout team to emulate Robinson in practice this week will be difficult enough because it's nearly impossible to prepare for that kind of speed from a quarterback.

Clijsters beats Stosur to reach US Open semifinals
NEW YORK (AP) - Defending champion Kim Clijsters has increased her U.S. Open winning streak to 19 matches by beating Sam Stosur 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seeded Clijsters will face No. 3 Venus Williams in the semifinals, a matchup between two women who both have won two titles at Flushing Meadows. Clijsters and the fifth-seeded Stosur, the runner-up at this year's French Open, had trouble serving in windy conditions Tuesday night. There were a total of 18 service breaks, including a stretch in which there were nine in a span of 10 games.

Blackhawks promote Bowman
CHICAGO (AP) - General manager Stan Bowman has been promoted to vice president/general manager in a series of moves by the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. The 37 year old Bowman became the youngest general manager in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup when the Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in June. Chicago's championship, its first since 1961, came in Bowman's first year as GM. Bowman, the son of legendary NHL coach Scotty Bowman, has been with the Blackhawks for 10 seasons. He was named the ninth general manager in franchise history on July 14, 2009.
