Tigers snap skid with 6-2 over Red Sox
(DETROIT) - The Detroit Tigers insisted they were not concerned about their worst skid of the year a few hours before playing the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox in a rematch of the AL championship series. Detroit later showed it still has what it takes to win with strong pitching, big hits and usually sound defense. Ian Kinsler and Torii Hunter hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning and Victor Martinez cleared the fences in the eighth, helping Detroit beat Boston 6-2 and end a season-high five-game losing streak Friday. Drew Smyly (3-4) pitched six strong innings, allowing 2 runs on five hits and striking out four. Detroit had lost 13 of 17 games, including the previous four, since sweeping the Red Sox on the road a few weeks ago.

Angels double up White Sox in 8-4 win
(ANAHEIM) - After limping home from a 3-7 road trip, the Los Angeles Angels needed a spark. Kole Calhoun gave it to them in the first inning with a leadoff homer. Calhoun also had a two-run double during a five-run fourth and Albert Pujols went deep as well to lead Jered Weaver and the Angels past the Chicaog White Sox 8-4 Friday night. Weaver (7-4) won for the sixth time in eight starts, allowing two runs, five hits and four walks in six innings. His teammates staked him to a 7-1 lead through four. Pujols capped the Angels' scoring in the bottom half with his 15th homer and the 507th of his career. Adam Dunn capped his three-hit night with a two-run homer. It was his 10th this season and the 450th of his career. Chicago, starting its third straight series in Southern California, slipped 3 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Detroit. After this series, the White Sox return home for a four-game showdown with
the Tigers.

Rizzo's homer gives Cubs win over Mets
(CHICAGO) – Anthony Rizzo stayed at the plate for an extra second as his towering drive headed toward right field. The big first baseman just wanted to make sure it was fair before he got started on one enjoyable trip around the bases. Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Friday for their season-high fourth consecutive victory. The Cubs recovered after closer Hector Rondon blew a three-run lead in the ninth, earning their first four-game winning streak since last July 6-9. Rizzo also had a two-run double in the eighth and Jason Hammel pitched seven shutout innings. Junior Lake hit a leadoff single against Kevin Slowey (1-1) before Rizzo connected for his 12th homer. It was Rizzo's second homer in two days and the Cubs' first game-ending shot since he connected against St. Louis on July 29, 2012. Carlos Villanueva (2-5) pitched two perfect innings for the win. Chris Coghlan and Nate Scheirholtz each had two hits. Hammel allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked one, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings over his last two outings. The right-hander, who could be an attractive trade target for a contender at next month's deadline, is 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA over his last four starts.
