Ortiz's homer leads Boston past Detroit 5-3
(DETROIT) – David Ortiz's drive was plenty deep and it was headed toward the right part of the ballpark. Ortiz hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, and the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, snapping their five game losing streak. The Red Sox left men on base all night long, including when Ortiz was retired on a deep fly ball to center in the seventh, but there was no doubt about his homer off Joba Chamberlain, which carried about halfway up the section of seats beyond the wall in right. Chamberlain (1-3) was trying to protect a one-run lead instead of struggling closer Joe Nathan, who had pitched the previous two nights. John Lackey (7-4) pitched eight sharp innings for Boston, and Koji Uehara tossed a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 12 chances. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera left in the sixth with left hamstring tightness. Anibal Sanchez started for the Tigers, and allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two. After Boston took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Eugenio Suarez tied it in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single. Detroit catcher Alex Avila struck out three times in his first game back since he was hit in the head Friday by the follow-through of Ortiz's swing.

Angels beat White Sox 4-2
(ANAHEIM) - This was one time when C.J. Wilson didn't question manager Mike Scioscia's decision to remove him from a game while an inning was in progress. Despite the fact that a bout with the flu had sapped his energy, he still was able to dominate the Chicago White Sox for 7 1/3 innings. Wilson bounced back strongly from his shortest outing of the season, taking a three-hit shutout into the eighth, and Josh Hamilton drive in three runs to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Joe Smith relieved Wilson and then Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his 10th save. The White Sox concluded a nine-game stretch in Southern California in which they lost two of three to San Diego, won two of three against the Dodgers and were swept by the Angels thanks to Wilson's gem. Jose Quintana (3-6) allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks through 4 1/3 innings and struck out four. It was the eighth time in the left-hander's 13 starts that he left a game with fewer than three runs of support, and he is 0-6 in those outings.

Marlins beat Cubs 4-3
(CHICAGO) – Henderson Alvarez's scoreless streak came to an end, and the Miami Marlins didn't care one bit. They were just happy to hear the talented right-hander should be able to make his next start after a scary play at first base.Alvarez injured his left hip in the sixth, but Miami made the most of a wild afternoon for Pedro Strop in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday that averted a three-game series sweep. The Cubs got six scoreless innings from Jake Arrieta, but came up just short in a bid for their first six game winning streak since they won seven in a row in 2011. Strop (0-3) took the loss while Mike Dunn (5-3) got two outs for the win for the Marlins after Alvarez went down.
