Scherzer throws complete game in Tigers' win
(CHICAGO) – Max Scherzer already has a Cy Young Award. Now he has a complete game. Scherzer tossed a three-hitter in his 179th career start, the most without a complete game in modern baseball history (since 1900), according to ESPN Stats & Information and Victor Martinez hit his 16th home run to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Scherzer (8-2) was back in his 2013 Cy Young form, striking out eight and walking three while outdueling Chicago starter Chris Sale (501). Only three times did the White Sox have men in scoring position. Sale was nearly as sharp as Scherzer. He struck out 10, all swinging, to match a season high and allowed five hits in seven innings. Martinez hit a solo shot into the left field bullpen to lead off the fifth for the only run off Sale. Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs with an infield single with two out in the eighth of reliever Jake Petricka to put the Tigers ahead 3-0. Bryan Holaday drove in an insurance run in the ninth. Sale didn't allow a baserunner until Rajai Davis led off the fourth with a single and left the game with Detroit leading 1-0. Martinez, who entered the game second in the AL with .330 average, extended his hitting streak to seven games as the Tigers ended a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 11. By salvaging the final game of its rain-shortened series against the White Sox, first-place Detroit widened its AL Central lead to 2½ games over idle Kansas City.

Pirates shut out Cubs 4-0
(PITTSBURGH) – Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has coined a phrase for where star center fielder Andrew McCutchen is at the moment. McHot! And for once, that might be an understatement. The reigning National League MVP had two doubles and two RBI's to lift the Pirates to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. McCutchen is batting .428 (18 of 42) this month, with 15 of his hits going for extra bases. Russell Martin also doubled twice for the Pirates and rookie Gregory Polanco got a hit in the third straight game since his call-up. Edinson Volquez (4-5) pitched seven effective innings to win for the third time in his last five starts. Volquez struck out five and walked two while outpitching Chicago ace Jeff Samardzija (2-6). Luis Valbuena had two doubles for the Cubs, who went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position to fall for the fourth time in five games. The Cubs have scored two runs or fewer in nine of Samardzija's 14 starts.
