Tigers beat Twins on sacrifice in 9th inning
(DETROIT) – Victor Martinez thought he had just beaten the Minnesota Twins Sunday. With one out in the bottom of the ninth and Torii Hunter on first base, Martinez launched a ball to deep right field that he and everyone in the park was going to be a walk-off homer. Martinez lingered near the plate, watching the ball sail toward the bleachers, then realized he better start running. The ball came down inches short of the top of the wall, where Oswaldo Arcia dropped it for his second huge defensive mistake of the game, both on flyballs by Martinez. So with Hunter on third and Martinez at first, J.D. Martinez stepped to the plate and delivered a fly ball to centerfield. Hunter never hesitated and scored, giving Detroit a 4-3 win over the Twins. The game still wasn't officially over, as Ron Gardenhire had his players appeal to third, thinking that Hunter might have left early, but the umpires ruled he had scored legally. Joe Nathan (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win. Minnesota starter Ricky Nolasco allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings, while Detroit's Rick Porcello pitched seven innings, also giving up three runs.

Kansas City doubles up Chicago 6-3 for win
(CHICAGO) - CHICAGO -- The Royals are complementing their solid defense and pitching with a potent offense. Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer and Kansas City completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-3 win Sunday. James Shields (8-3) won his fifth straight decision and the Royals extended their season-high win streak to seven games. Shields pitched out of trouble throughout his outing allowing three runs and 10 hits in six innings. Greg Holland pitched a scoreless ninth for his 20th save in 21 chances. Alejandro De Aza had a two-run double for the White Sox, who lost their fourth straight game. Starter Andre Rienzo (4-4) allowed six runs and six hits in six innings. The White Sox have lost 10 of their past 11 home games against the Royals been outscored 53-20 in them.

Cubs shut out Phillies
(PHILADELPHIA) - It took a while, but the Chicago Cubs at last won a series away from Wrigley Field. Now, they hope to keep it going. Travis Wood pitched hitless ball into the sixth inning and the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Philies 3-0 Sunday, taking two of three at Citizens Bank Park. Anthony Rizzo hit his 14th home run and Starlin Castro added three hits for Chicago. The last-place Cubs had been 0-9-3 in road series this year, and hadn't won a set away from Chicago since last Sept. 9-11. This was the Cubs' first series win in Philadelphia since April 2001. The Phillies finished with just three hits against Wood (7-5) and closer Neil Ramirez while being shut out for the ninth time this year. Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg seemed frustrated that Philadelphia's hitters didn't adjust to Wood. A.J. Burnett (4-6) gave up three runs and eight hits in eight innings. He moved past Hall of Famer Eddie Plank into 50th place on the career strikeout list with his fifth-inning fanning of Luis Valbuena, giving him 2,252.
