Serena, Sharapova march on at Wimbledon
(LONDON, ENGLAND) - Both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova coasted in their Wimbledon openers Tuesday. A five-time Wimbledon winner, Williams made light work of Anna Tatishvili, beating the fellow American 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round. Williams, who lost in the second round at the French Open, hit 31 winners and had 16 aces. Sharapova, fresh off a victory at the French Open, sent British wild-card entry Samantha Murray packing with a 6-1, 6-0 result. Other women's winners on Tuesday included Sabne Lisicki, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki.
Nadal needs rally to win first match at Wimbledon
(LONDON) – Chasing a shot to his right, Rafael Nadal slipped and tumbled to the Centre Court turf. He popped up, raced across the baseline to get back into the point, and later capped the 14-stroke exchange with a backhand passing winner. Overcoming a deficit against a flat-hitting opponent who kept finding lines early, Nadal beat 51st-ranked Martin Klizan of Slovakia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round. Next for Nadal is a match against the man who beat him in 2013's second round, Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic. Like Nadal, Roger Federer also exited early last year, but on Tuesday he was all business and advanced in straight sets. Seven-time champion Federer's 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory dropped Italy's Paolo Lorenzi to 0-13 for his Grand Slam career, while 2002 champion Lleyton Hewit beat Michgal Przysiezny of Poland 6-2, 6-7 (14), 6-1, 6-4. Tuesday featured a strong showing by Americans as No. 9 John Isner, Sam Querrey, Jack Sock and Denis Kudla all advanced.
