Tigers top Royals 2-1 for fifth straight win
(KANSAS CITY) – Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was feeling ill even before Friday night's game against Kansas City, so he told bench coach Gene Lamont in the second inning that he was heading upstairs. He missed having a front-row seat to watch his pitching staff's magic act. Just like Houdini making his greatest escapes, Anibal Sanchez and the Tigers bullpen wiggled out of jams in every inning. Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera drove in a run apiece, and that was just enough to give the AL Central-leading Tigers a 2-1 victory over the second-place Royals. Sanchez (6-3) scattered eight hits without a walk over seven innings, Joba Chamberlain got out of a tense eighth, and Joe Nathan worked around a single and a walk in the ninth for his 19th save, and give Detroit its fifth straight win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium this season. Salvador Perez drove in the only run for the Royals, who squandered a solid start by Danny Duffy (5-9). He gave up both runs, only one earned, while losing for the fourth time in five starts.

Cleveland tops Chicago 7-4
(CLEVELAND) – Nick Swicher is ready for LeBron James' return to Cleveland. Swisher hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning of Cleveland's 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Before Swisher's home run, the biggest cheer from the crowd of 24,652 came when the Indians put a message on the scoreboard welcoming home James, who announced he was returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Corey Kluber (9-6) allowed four runs in six innings while David Murphy also homered for Cleveland, his first since May 21. The win moved the Indians back to .500 (46-46) for the first time since June 20. Kluber, left off the AL All-Star team despite a strong first half, wasn't his usual dominant self but pitched well enough to win. The right-hander has won three of his last four decisions. Swisher's homer off Hector Noesi (3-7) to center field broke a 4-4 tie. Adam Dunn hit a leadoff homer in the fifth for Chicago, which has lost three straight. The White Sox took the lead on three different occasions, but the Indians responded to tie or go ahead each time in their next at-bat.

Cubs beat the Braves 5-4
(CHICAGO) – Jake Arrieta is doing his part to fill the gap left by Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. Arrieta pitched well into the eighth inning and Justin Ruggiano hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning Friday that sent the Chicago Cubs over the Atlanta Braves 5-4. Arrieta gave up three runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.30 ERA in his last seven starts. Arrieta said he has taken more of a leadership position after Samardzija and Hammel were traded to Oakland last week. Arrieta figures to be one of the few mainstays along with All Stars Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro as the Cubs continue to rebuild within the system. Arismendy Alcantara singled with two outs off Jordan Walden (0-1) in the Cubs ninth and stole second. Ruggiano then got a hit that slipped past shortstop Andrelton Simmons to win it. The Braves, who scored the tying run in the top of the ninth on Christian Bethancourt's two out single, have lost five of six following a nine game winning streak.
