Angels rally past Tigers for 2-1 win
(ANAHEIM) - For the first five innings, the Los Angeles Angels barely had a chance against Detroit's Drew Smyly. After that, the Angels put together just enough offense and more than enough quality relief pitching to secure another gritty win. Efren Navarro and Kole Calhoun drove in runs in the sixth, and the Angels overcame Smyly's 11-strikeout effort for a 2-1 victory Friday night. Navarro had two hits after replacing Josh Hamilton in the fourth inning as the Angels earned their majors-leading 36th home victory by beating the majors' best road team. Yet even Navarro wondered whether the Angels could break through against Smyly, who struck out six straight at one point. Miguel Cabrera homered and Smyly (6-9) had his career-high in strikeouts for the Tigers, who have lost seven of eight in Anaheim. After Detroit's pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in Thursday's series opener, Smyly struck out eight of the Angels' first 10 hitters. The left-hander overwhelmed Los Angeles until the sixth, retiring his first 13 batters and striking out nine different Angels. Tyler Skaggs yielded five hits in 5 2-3 resourceful innings for the Angels, who have won 14 of 19.

Abreu hits 30th HR in win over Twins
(MINNEAPOLIS) – Chicago manager Robin Ventura is no longer surprised when Jose Abreu hits a long home run or does something else spectacular. Abreu hit his major league-leading 30th homer and drove in three runs, leading the White Sox past the Minnesota Twins 9-5 on Friday night. Abreu had two hits and scored twice. The Cuban rookie has 77 RBI's. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera began the day leading the majors with 80. The White Sox said in research by the Elias Sports Bureau that Abreu's 89 games are the third fastest in major league history to reach 30 home runs. He also joined Jose Canseco and Tony Oliva as the only Cuban-born rookies to hit 30 homers. Alexei Ramirez and Tyler Flowers also homered for the White Sox. Dayan Viciedo tied a career high with four of Chicago's 17 hits. John Danks (9-6), the subject of recent trade rumors, gave up four runs over seven innings as the White Sox have won six of their last nine.

Valbuena HR helps Cubs beat Cardinals
(CHICAGO) - The Chicago Cubs don't have the look of a team more interested in draft position than on-field success. One day after the Central Division cellar-dwellers couldn't have looked worse in a 13-3 embarrassment against the lowly San Diego Padres, they showed some grit in a come-from-behind, 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, who suffered their fourth consecutive loss on Friday. Luis Valbuena hit a decisive two-run homer in the seventh to decide the see-saw affair. Kevin Siegrist (1-2) hit Anthony Rizzo with a full-count pitch to start the inning. One batter later, Valbuena launched the first pitch into the center-field bleachers, his first homer against a left-hander in 37 at-bats this season. The Cardinals tied the score 5-5 on solo homers by Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Oscar Taveras singled to break the tie in the sixth, but the lead was short-lived. Justin Grimm (3-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. Hector Rondon retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances. Cubs starter Travis Wood did well to survive five innings after a rocky start. He allowed five runs and seven hits with one walk. Wood aided his cause with a solo homer off Joe Kelly in the fourth inning, his third of the season. He became the first Cubs pitcher since Carlos Zambrano (2009) with at least 10 RBI's in a season. Ryan Sweeney hit a three run homer for the Cubs.
