Freese's late HR leads Angels past Tigers 2-1
(ANAHEIM) – David Freese hit a tiebreaking homer off Joba Chamberlain in the eightn inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Sunday for their third straight victory. Erick Aybar scored from second base on Rick Porcello's poor pickoff throw in the fifth for the Angels, who improved the majors' second-best record to 63-41 in the finale of a 10 game homestand. Hector Santiago and three Angels relievers combined on a three hitter as Detroit managed just one hit in its final 25 at-bats, getting just one baserunner after the first inning. Victor Martinez had an RBI double in the first inning for the Tigers, who have lost nine of 10 at the Big A, including three of four in this series. Joe Smith (4-0) pitched the eighth for Los Angeles, which got nine innings of scoreless, two-hit relief pitching in its three straight wins over Detroit. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his third save in four appearances with his new club. Porcello pitched seven innings of five hit ball for the Tigers, but left without his 13th victory, which would have matched St. Louis' Adam Wainwright for the major league lead. Porcello struck out six, including the last four batters he faced, and only allowed a runner to reach second base in the fifth inning.

Twins beat White Sox 4-3
(MINNEAPOLIS) – A big hit from Sam Fuld and a quick recovery by Glen Perkins gave the Minnesota Twins a win that temporarily helped them forget about a season that's slipping away. Fuld hit a tiebreaking, two-run single off Javy Guerra in a three-run seventh inning, and the Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-3 Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep. Danny Santana had two RBIs for the last-place Twins, who won for just the 11th time in their last 30 games. Perkins loaded the bases in the ninth, and it looked like Minnesota's 10 game homestand was going to end with yet another frustrating defeat. But Perkins retired Gordon Beckham on a flyout for his 25th save in 28 chances. The Twins averted getting swept by the White Sox in a four-game series for the first time in franchise history. Chicago led 2-1 in the seventh when Minnesota loaded the bases against Ronald Belisario (3-7) on walks to Josh Willingham and Eric Fryer around a single by Chris Parmelee. Chicago rookie Jose Abreu had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, and drove in his 79th run, second in the major leagues behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera. White Sox starter Scott Carroll allowed one run and four hits in six innings, leaving after just 78 pitches with a blister on his middle finger.

Cardinals shut out Cubs 1-0
(CHICAGO) - When St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny visited the mound with two out and two on in the seventh inning on Sunday, he had no idea whether he was going to replace starter Adam Wainwright. Methany liked what he heard and saw and returned to the dugout. Wainwright then got Nate Scheirholts to ground out to complete a strong outing. The right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings and Matt Holliday hit a solo homer to lead the Cardinals to a 1-0 victory and a series win over the Chicago Cubs. Wainwright (13-5) allowed five hits and walked three during his seven innings to take over the Major League lead in wins. It was a far cry from his previous outing when he allowed six runs (four earned) in 4 2-3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday. Kevin Siegrist worked the eighth and Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 36 chances.Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks (1-1) allowed just one run on seven hits in 6 1-3 innings.
