Lions Acquire WR Baldwin Off Waivers
Tuesday Aug 05, 2014 12:00am

(ALLEN PARK) - The Detroit Lions have always seemed to be in the market for tall wide receivers and on Monday, they added another one. The Lions claimed former first-round pick Jonathan Baldwin, who was cut by San Francisco on Sunday, his agent confirmed to ESPN.com. This will be Baldwin's third team since being drafted with the No. 26 pick in the 2011 draft by Kansas City. Baldwin played two seasons for the Chiefs before being traded to San Francisco before last season. He was a non-factor with the 49ers last season, catching three passes for 28 yards. In his career, he has 44 receptions for 607 yards and two touchdowns. He has never caught more than 21 passes in a season. He now joins a receiving corps in the middle of a massive battle for roster spots behind starters Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate. He'll be competing with Kevin Ogletree, Kris Durham, Corey Fuller, Ryan Broyles and Jeremy Ross for a roster spot. The 6 foot 4 Baldwin was a college standout at Pittsburgh, where he caught 128 passes for 2,337 yards and 16 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Panthers. Those skills turned him into a first round pick for the Chiefs. To make room for Baldwin the Lions waived wide receiver Reese Wiggins.
