Scherzer's 14 K's helpTigers top Pirates 5-2
(DETROIT) – Mas Scherzer and Brad Ausmus both knew early on Thursday afternoon that something special might be happening. Scherzer started by striking out eight Pittsburgh batters in the first three innings, and finished with 14 strikeouts in eight shutout innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Pirated 5-2. Scherzer (14-4) took another step toward a second straight American League Cy Young Award, holding Pittsburgh to three hits and two walks. Since June 22, Scherzer is 6-1 in 10 starts with a 1.78 ERA and 85 strikeouts as opposed to only 52 hits. Scherzer's performance and a homer from J.D. Martinez gave the Tigers a much-needed sweep of the short two-game series and a split of the four games in the home-and-home series that started Monday in Pittsburgh. Francisco Liriano (3-9) took a tough loss for Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out nine, but wasn't able to match Scherzer's brilliance. The Tigers broke the game open in the eighth, scoring one run on a throwing error by Michael Martinez before Nick Castellanos added a two-run single. That became important when Gaby Sancez hit a two run homer off Phil Coke in the ninth.

Brewers beat Cubs 6-2
(CHICAGO) – Mike Fiers has stepped back into the Milwaukee Brewers' rotation in a big way and when they needed a boost. Fiers struck out a career-high 14 in six innings of three-hit ball, Khris Davis and Mark Reynolds homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Thursday. Fiers (2-1) dominated and walked only one in his second start this season since being recalled from Triple-A Nashville to face the Dodgers last Saturday. In that one, he pitched eight strong innings and outdueled Zach Greinke for his first win this season. Scotter Gennett drove in two runs with a double, and Elian Herrara and Carlos Gomez each had RBI's for the Brewers. Manager Ron Roenicke thinks Fiers looks as sharp as he was in 2012, when the right-hander was 8-6 with a 2.85 ERA through August. Cubs starter Edwin Jackson (6-13) lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs before being lifted for Jacob Turner, who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his Cubs debut. Jackson has lost six of his last seven decisions.
