Lions Release CB Florence
Wednesday Aug 20, 2014 12:00am

(ALLEN PARK) - Less than two weeks ago, Drayton Florence came to the Detroit Lions confident he would be playing in the NFL again this season. Now, the veteran cornerback is once again out of a job. The Lions released Florence on Tuesday afternoon, 12 days after bringing him in as a potential veteran presence alongside Rashaen Mathis at corner. Florence, though, never seemed to work out. He didn't play in the preseason opener and then played with third-teamers against Oakland on Friday night. He never really rose up the depth chart in practice, either, and considering his lack of usage on special teams, he didn't appear to be working out as well as Detroit had hoped, so the team chose to let him go. Florence, a second-round draft pick in 2003, played in 157 regular season games with 104 starts with five teams, including the Lions. He has 407 career regular season tackles and 20 regular season interceptions in his career.
